![]() History Philipsburg Manor House at the Upper Mills The village is home to the Philipsburg Manor House and the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, as well as the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where in addition to Irving, numerous other notable people are buried. Despite this designation, Sleepy Hollow has also been called "the safest small 'city' in America". Owing to this story, as well as the village's roots in early American history and folklore, Sleepy Hollow is considered by some to be one of the "most haunted places in the world". The village is known internationally through " The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", an 1820 short story about the local area and its infamous specter, the Headless Horseman, written by Washington Irving, who lived in Tarrytown and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Originally incorporated as North Tarrytown in the late 19th century, the village adopted its current name in 1996. The population of the village at the 2020 census was 9,986. To the south of Sleepy Hollow is the village of Tarrytown, and to the north and east are unincorporated parts of Mount Pleasant. The village is located on the east bank of the Hudson River, about 30 miles (48 km) north of New York City, and is served by the Philipse Manor stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line. Most of our time in Nyack was spent perusing the many small shops in the downtown area, and then finding a spot along the river to admire the view. ![]() We arrived just before the Edward Hopper House closed, so I made myself content with just a few photos of the exterior. I had one goal and one goal only: to see the grave of the author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Luckily, the entrance to the cemetery had a good map with Washington Irving's grave marked. ![]() Both were pleasant.Īfter a bite to eat and a short walk through the center of Tarrytown, we drove to the neighboring village of Sleepy Hollow. One path followed the river, but the other was more inland and secluded. We walked along the trails, shielding ourselves as best we could from the smiting wind whipping along the Hudson. We skipped the tour of this Gothic Revival mansion, designed in 1838, instead opting for a ticket that granted us access only to the extensive grounds. The towns are just minutes from one another and about an hour away by car from Bay Ridge.įirst stop: Tarrytown. This past Memorial Day weekend we decided to fix that by taking a day trip to three Hudson River towns just north of the city: Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Nyack. I see it lap against Manhattan's western shore a few times a year, but usually at some distance. For someone who's lived in New York for nearly six years, I've seen surprisingly little of the Hudson River.
